Natural Compound Acteoside Protects the Liver by Targeting CMPK2

A research team has identified cytosine monophosphate kinase 2 (CMPK2) as a key molecular driver of hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (HIRI) and shown that acteoside (ACT), a natural compound found in traditional Chinese medicinal herbs, can protect the liver by interrupting CMPK2-centered redox metabolism. The study reveals that ACT reduces mitochondrial lipid overload, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) leakage, and inflammatory signaling in liver injury models. These findings highlight ACT as a promising multitarget therapeutic candidate for preventing liver damage during surgery and transplantation.
