Engineered Simplicity: New Microfluidic Device Offers Rapid Kidney Health Check

A new microfluidic device promises to revolutionize kidney disease screening by enabling rapid, accurate, and low-cost testing of creatinine levels in urine. Creatinine is a key biomarker used to diagnose and monitor chronic kidney disease (CKD), but current clinical tests require centralized lab processing and accurate point-of-care test systems remain complicated and cost-prohibitive. The newly developed uCR-Chip performs a precise colorimetric assay using passive fluid mixing and a USB microscope-based reader. The system delivers clinically relevant results within 7 minutes and meets the sensitivity standards of existing point-of-care tests. With a cost of less than $1 per test and no external power required, this innovation could significantly expand access to CKD diagnostics in remote or resource-limited settings.
